News I’m Watching...

Patients are using health apps to report suicidal behavior. Stat News reportedthat 130,000 of the 10 million health assessments conducted by Ada Health’s chatbot-based coaching system involved people sharing about suicidal thoughts or behaviors. In other instances, a woman told a doctor during a telemedicine visit that her spouse had punched her, leading the doctor to call 911. As Americans become more comfortable sharing experiences like these with computers, this raises questions about who is trained to respond.
“Teams need to be appropriately equipped to survey, triage, and respond to user endorsements of crisis/high-risk behaviors.” - Joseph Harrison, project manager, Penn Medicine Nudge Unit at the University of Pennsylvania
